Save Souls - Make Friends - Teach English
and GED Preparation.
Project
Light is the Conference choice for teaching English as a Second
Language. Using computers to display the program the student hears, sees
and develops some minimum computer skills.
In the United States many people are broken and
oppressed by illiteracy and the inability to communicate in English.
We plant Learning Centers where communities want
to solve the problems associated with illiteracy and/or where people
have a need to learn English. We train those Organizations on how to
start-up Learning and tutor students using Project Light's One-to-One
Literacy & ESL Solutions. Project Light is about serving others by
providing technology and building relationships.
It's about ministering to those in need; it's
about making the world a better place by shining light into the
darkness.
Project Light uses The Christian Literary Series
to teach English; 107 of the 114
lessons use Bible Readings and Bible Stories.
The second side of Project Light is called Zero
to Five. This portion of the program can take a person from not
reading or writing any English to functioning at a Fifth Grade Level in
approximately 18 months.
The teaching is done in the Tutor / Student
Model where a tutor is matched with a student. The first thing
done is to
make a friend,
then
try to save a Soul
and finally
teach English.
The Tutor shares their faith with the student by
talking about their church, helping the student understand basic needs –
going to the Doctor, obtaining utilities, grocery shopping – part of the
lesson is practicing use of English.
There are currently Project Light Learning
Centers located in FUMC Big Spring, Northridge UMC Lamesa, Asbury UMC Lubbock, Bovina UMC Bovina, and FUMC Dumas. The program has helped set up
Centers in McAllen, Texas, Alpine New Mexico and Pauls Valley, Oklahoma.
Conference Coordinator: Orby Brooks of FUMC
Dumas.
